The Evergreen Club is an ensemble of eight musicians who perform on a collection of bronze, wood, bamboo and stringed instruments. Together these instruments are known as a gamelan, which has been an important part of Indonesian musical life for centuries. Of the wide variety of gamelan types prevalent in Indonesia, the Evergreen Club uses a gamelan degung whose distinctive degung scale consists of five notes. Gamelan degung originates from the west part of Java known as Sunda, and is especially associated with the city of Bandung. It is a tradition in Indonesia that each gamelan, in addition to its genereic name, also have a personal name. Si Pawit was the name given to the Evergreen Club's instruments by Enogh Atmadibrata, the man who assisted Jon Siddall in obtaining the instruments. Si Pawit means The Beginning and was the name of a gamelan that Mr. Atmadibrata, a prominent choreographer, was involved with at one time. These instruments were used to accompany a piece of his choreography that combined dance with degung instruments for the first time in 1957. In the late 1960's, this gamelan was lost. It is Mr. Atmadibrata's hope that the Evergreen Club's gamelan is "the reincarnation of the original Si Pawit".
