Recording the Song cycles CD was definitely one of the more interesting recordings that I have done. Not only are these people Bicycle enthusiasts and activists but they perform complicated choral singing while riding their bikes. This did present problems for recording since some of the tracks were recorded while they were riding. Fortunately, we also spent a day recording in a church and although being sedentary is not their natural state the recorded results were great.

Mike Whitla recording engineer for Song Cycles CD "The Round Album".

Song Cycles in their own words:

The Wheel Truth About Song Cycles: We’re a cult. It’s true.
Why else would adults don purple and lime-green attire and try and drown out the noise of big-city traffic with melodic odes to the bicycle? Back in 1993, it struck us as a bit unlikely too. But founding member Sue Zielinski had a dream of "a symphony of self-propelled humanity," and a few of us humored her for what we thought would be a one-off performance at Toronto’s annual Bike Week. It immediately became obvious that we were on to something, because before we’d even learned one song we were interviewed by CBC radio. Then they told two friends, and they told two friends and within a few weeks we had been on local radio and television, the front page of the Toronto Star, Midday, the National, and in Macleans magazine. Those of us working as sustainable transportation activists took careful note of the lesson: making space for humour and fun and musical community not only lifts our spirits - it’s a darned effective way of spreading the word.

Music, Lyrics and Solo vocal by Marie-Lynn Hammond Male solo by Alan Yoshioka Arrangement by Greg Furlong
Toronto folk singer Marie-Lynn Hammond, with some encouragement from a choir member, wrote this tantalizing tango for Bike Week 1994.
It was a smash hit -- she says hordes of sexy male cyclists regularly clamour for the tune.
Those clingy black shorts they wear
The tanned and bony knees they bear
The helmets, leather gloves and pumps
The fanny packs upon their rumps
Oh I like, I like, I like - a man on a bike

Even in a navy 3-piece suit,
With a briefcase on the carrier to boot,
A silver clip encircling the shin
Mmmm to neatly tuck the pant leg in

Oh she likes, she likes, she likes - gentlemen on bikes
Something 'bout a man on a bicycle,
That's both naughty, yet nicycle
The friendly HIs, the muscled thighs,
Oh I melt just like an icicle
Around a man on a bicycle

Oh when it comes to the art of seduction,
By now you must have made the deduction
That a fellow in a car doesn't get very far with me
Proving once again that less is more,
I say 2-wheels are much hotter than 4
And a 5-speed or a 10-speed gives me all the speed I really need
To drive me to ecstasy

What a thrilling nonpolluting sight,
Men pedaling with all their might
Crouched like panthers over handle bars
Trying not to be rundown by cars
I just know they must be special guys
I confess they make me fantasize
Keep your movie stars for what they're worth
Give me a man who wants to save the earth
Oh he likes, he likes, he likes - gentlemen on bikes
CD DEDICATION
We are honoured to dedicate this music to Dan Leckie (1949-1998), who worked optimistically, inclusively and with great vision towards a green, healthy and just City. Dan could be seen on his bike every day, and as a City Councilor was the Chair of the Toronto City Cycling Committee. His legacy of accomplishments will continue to benefit not only those of us lucky enough to have known him, but countless others who never had the privilege. The CD project was supported by the Dan Leckie Trust Fund, and 50% of the proceeds will be donated back to the Trust to support projects which bring the community together around positive environmental change.
